Kambaba Jasper is an orbicular patterned stone that most experts say is from a stromatolite. Stromatolites are sedimentary in origin and are created my microscopic organisms such as cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria are prokaryotes related to bacteria that could carry out photosynthesis. This in the earliest known form of life, and is responsible for our oxygen atmosphere. As such, fossilised stromatolites are around 3 billion years old. Also known as Kabamba Jasper after the company that mines it in Madagascar.
Some people say it is a rhyolite, and a rock of volcanic origin, but without cutting a thin section and putting it under a microscope it’s difficult to put an end to the debate, but here we will go with the consensus.
