Lavender & Chamomile Soap

My Soap Story

April 4, 2022 0 By Saranne Mallinson

Merry Meet!

Once a month I’ll do a focus on things I sell. This month, I’m focusing on soap, as this is the product I’ve been making and selling the longest, and was how my business got started.

In 2015 I wanted to start my own business. I had recently changed jobs and had more time on my hands; mainly because I wasn’t spending 5 hours on a train every day going too and from work. I loved my job, but I had no time for family life and hobbies, so in 2014 I left and got a job locally in Crawley.

2015 was spent perfecting soap recipies and getting a chartered chemist to sign them off.  As a witch I wanted to make ritual cleansing soaps, and soaps with minimalist ingredients, and by the end of 2015 I had five lines of soap approved and on the EU Notifcation Portal. These were cold pressed Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Chocolate and Natural Plain. I used essential oils in these, and natural colourings such as cocoa powder.

I started selling in the spring of 2016 as a sole trader under the name of Sara’s Soap Shop. Some of you may remember this.  I even made a video on how to make a basic soap and unploaded it to YouTube!

By September 2016 I was working holistic and community fairs, and I even had a stall in the Tesco staff canteen at the home delivery hub, selling gift packs for Christmas.

In 2019 I started looking at shops, and for somewhere to have a physical presence rather than selling on stalls at fairs, and as part of this I rebranded the business and incorporated.  In July 2019 the business became Something Wiccan Ltd, and I expanded my range of witchy products with a focus on altar supplies, crystals, tarot cards, candles and of course, soap.  I also became a Peter Stone jewellery stockist, and sell high quality solid silver items.

The shop plans didn’t come to fruition due to several reasons, including Covid, and I relaunched my business formally online with a website in September 2019; just in time for Mabon.

In 2020 I started work on a new range of soaps. This included discontinuing some of the previous lines so that I didn’t have too many lines available. I chose to discontinue all of the cold pressed lines apart from the chocolate soap and the natural plain soap, and I introduced five new scents. These included Viking Warrior, Clary Sage & Tea Tree, Lavender & Chamomile, Cinnamon & Apple, and Pink Jasmine. These were made with a new melt and pour recipe, and came in Sun & Moon shapes.

I lauched this range live on Facebook on 1st July 2021!  Due to demand, I also sell some of the new lines in loaf form for people who want to buy in bulk and save a bit of money.

Since then I have added a few more soaps to the range after they were approved, including Cookie scented melt and pour soap, an orange scented Neon Pride melt and pour soap, and a Dead Sea Mud cold pressed soap.

And for 2022 I have a few more lines currently being signed off by the chemist. These include a Sun Soap made with my own blend of sun oil for rituals, a Green Man soap made in a mold of my own creation, and a soap to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. So look out for those launches!

If you want to buy any soaps, they are available HERE.

All soaps have Cosmetic Product Safety Reports from a chartered chemist to UK and EU legal standards, along with a Product Information File.  All products are registered on the UK Cosmetic Notification Portal.  Full safety information is available on the product page on the webiste.
